As a speech-language pathologist (SLP), helping clients make progress on articulation goals is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job.

Practice makes perfect, and working on the “ch” sound is no exception.

If you’re looking for a list of “ch” words for speech therapy, this article has you covered. Here you’ll find examples of initial “ch” words, medial “ch” words, and final “ch” words that are perfect for increasing trials during sessions.

Positive outcomes are linked to clients practicing their sounds routinely outside the therapy room. When SLPs send home speech word lists, children and their families are more likely to practice the “ch” phoneme throughout the week and between sessions.

The “ch” sound (represented as ʧ in the International Phonetic Alphabet) is a voiceless palato-alveolar affricate consonant that is typically acquired by age five. Common substitutions for the “ch” sound in children include the stop consonants “t” and “d.” For example, some clients may say “tair” instead of “chair.”

Moving up a hierarchy from producing the “ch” phoneme in isolation to using the sound in words and sentences is typical in speech therapy. Building production of the sound from its simplest form to more complex contexts—and ultimately spontaneous, conversational speech—is the long-term goal.

This list of “ch” words and sentences with “ch” will make it easier to support pediatric clients who are working on mastering this sound.

List of “ch” words

Targeting the “ch” sound involves focusing on production of this phoneme in the initial, medial, and final position of words. Some clients may struggle to produce the “ch” sound in one position (for example, at the beginning of words), while producing it accurately in other contexts (like the medial or final position of a word).

The following “ch” words for speech therapy are designed to support therapists and clients in practice and generalization of “ch” at the word level.

By drawing from a list of “ch” words for kids in all positions, SLPs can ensure clients become comfortable producing this phoneme in a variety of contexts. This “ch” words worksheet list includes 25 words with “ch” in the initial, medial, and final positions.

You may consider integrating these words into therapeutic activities during speech/language sessions, pairing them with picture cards, or incorporating them into games.

What’s most important is to promote repetition of the target sound (“ch”) as often as possible.

At the beginning of speech therapy, modeling production of “ch” and providing verbal or visual cues during articulation trials is often essential. Gradually, these supports may be faded as the client becomes independent in their mastery of the phoneme.

Sentences with “ch”
