Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use a variety of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes in private practice—among the most common is CPT code 92507.
Learn about the 92507 CPT code description, how to bill this code for insurance, and how to differentiate CPT code 92507 from other speech language pathology CPT codes developed by the American Medical Association (AMA).
Differentiating CPT codes and knowing how and when to use them is necessary to correctly bill insurance and get reimbursed for your services. Medicare coding rules can feel overwhelming at first glance. Fortunately, SLPs only need to be familiar with a few CPT codes when providing outpatient speech therapy.
Speech-language pathologists who bill for outpatient therapy use CPT codes to report their services to payers like insurance companies.
Designated codes for services like individual therapy, group therapy, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) evaluations, and evaluation of speech fluency help insurers determine how much to pay providers.
By using CPT codes, SLPs are able to bill for their services in a consistent manner that results in streamlined claims processing for everyone involved.
Ready to unlock the potential of your speech pathology practice with quick CPT reference guides? In this article, we’ve got the in’s and out’s of procedural code 92507 covered. Let’s break down this important CPT code–-so you can spend more time on the aspects of owning a speech therapy practice that you enjoy.
What is CPT code 92507?
The 92507 CPT code description covers individual treatment of speech, language, voice, communication, and/or auditory processing disorder.
As a speech therapist in private practice, this is your go-to code for most types of individual speech and language treatment.
There are a range of diagnoses and therapeutic services that are billed under CPT code 92507.
These speech-language diagnoses include (but are not limited to):
- Childhood apraxia of speech
- Receptive or expressive language delay or disorder
- Auditory processing disorder
- Aural rehabilitation
Keep in mind that the 92507 CPT code description specifically refers to therapy provided to one individual. In fact, there is a different CPT code for the same speech, language, and voice treatment when delivered to groups of two more clients, which is CPT code 92508.
SLPs who see clients for individual speech-language therapy sessions will almost always use CPT code 92507—except when providing therapeutic services that center on using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices.
When it’s time to bill for services, selecting the right CPT code helps streamline claims processing and decreases the possibility of insurance denials.
CPT code 92507 modifiers
SLPs may add a modifier to the end of a CPT code to provide additional information about the service provided.
Often, speech-language pathologists add modifiers to further specify the services rendered in the 92507 CPT code description.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requires the use of CPT code 92507 modifier GN to indicate that an SLP administered treatment. This makes it clear that services were rendered under a speech-language pathology or dysphagia plan of treatment. GN is one of the most common modifiers to CPT code 92507.
Some other relevant modifiers for speech-language pathologists include:
- 95 for synchronous audio-visual telehealth services
- 96 for habilitative care
- 52 for reduced services
- 22 for unusual procedural services
- KX for meeting requirements specified in the medical policy
Is CPT code 92507 a timed code?
CPT codes are designated as either “timed” or “untimed.” So, what’s the difference and is 92507 a timed code?
Timed CPT codes include a time designation such as “initial 15 minutes” or “per hour.” They can be billed more than once in a day.
According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), the most common CPT codes used by SLPs are untimed.
Like the majority of speech therapy CPT codes, code 92507 is untimed. That means it may only be billed once daily, irrespective of the amount of time spent on treatment.
There is no time designation in the 92507 CPT code description because it is service-based; the code simply refers to a single therapy session.
Other common CPT codes for SLPs
While CPT code 92507 is one of the most popular codes used by speech-language pathologists, it’s certainly not the only one.
SLPs who perform evaluations, provide therapy in groups, and support AAC frequently reference other CPT codes in their day-to-day work.
Some of the most CPT codes used by SLPs in private practice include:
- 92508: Treatment of speech, language, voice, communication and/or auditory processing (group of two or more individuals)
- 92522: Evaluation of speech sound production
- 92523: Evaluation of speech sound production with evaluation of language comprehension and expression
- 92521: Evaluation of speech fluency
- 92526: Treatment of swallowing dysfunction and/or oral function for feeding
- 92607: Evaluation for prescription of speech-generating AAC device (first hour)
- 92609: Therapeutic services for use of speech-generating device, including programming and modification
Auditory processing disorder code and treatment
The 92507 code description includes auditory processing disorder treatment within its scope.
That means when you provide therapy for auditory processing disorder, also known as central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), you’ll need to use CPT code 92507 to ensure the claim is processed correctly.
CAPD can impact learning and communication.
According to ASHA, speech-language pathologists can provide intervention for CAPD through three different methods:
1. Direct skills remediation
A direct skills intervention plan may include auditory and phoneme discrimination tasks, auditory pattern recognition, and binaural separation and integration.
2. Compensatory strategies
Simultaneously, SLPs can support clients in learning compensatory strategies like schema induction, discourse cohesion devices, and semantic network expansion.
3. Environmental modification
During speech sessions, therapists may suggest environmental modifications that enhance the ease of communication. Often, this leads to clients developing self-advocacy skills, such as requesting pausing and “chunking” of instructions at school or preferential seating.
No matter how you address CAPD, it’s important to bill for this disorder using CPT code 92507.
This multipurpose CPT code is essential knowledge for any SLP who provides outpatient therapy. With one code, you can file claims for individual treatment of most types of speech, language, and voice disorders.
Knowing how to bill for services as a speech-language pathologist in private practice can save you time and money, leading to satisfied clients who can count on you to deliver the highest quality therapy.
