Billing Automation Series Part One: Automatic Invoices

With the recent launch of AutoPay on SimplePractice, we want to highlight some of the tools you can use to set your billing on autopilot. We’ll start this three-part series with Automatic Invoice Generation.

In your SimplePractice account, you have the option to automatically generate invoices for your sessions. This means you won’t need to manually create invoices for your clients. Instead, SimplePractice does it for you!

Some people may be hesitant to jump into automatic invoicing because there’s a fear billing will get confusing. But we’ve actually added invoicing to SimplePractice to make your billing simpler and give you more functionality for billing your clients.


For the best experience in SimplePractice, we recommend that you set your invoices to generate to “Daily” so each night SimplePractice can automatically generate your invoices for you. This works great if you bill at the time of service or if you bill your clients weekly. We have a great guide in our help center for time of service billing.

If you bill monthly, you can also set your invoices to generate monthly so all sessions for the month will be on one invoice. We have a guide for this too!

To make all of this work best, make sure you set your session fees ahead of time. When you schedule a client, check that the session fee is correct (and, if you take insurance, that the copay is correct.). If you work out a new rate with your client or if you operate on a sliding scale, just make sure to change the session fee before the end of the day (or the end of the month for monthly invoice generation). This way the right amount will get billed to your client. It’s that simple!

Even if you normally don’t give invoices to your clients, it’s best to use them for your records. If your client needs billing records you won’t have to go through any extra work later. Plus, your statements and superbills will be simple to create!
