Building a more efficient, integrated future for mental healthcare

Too often, the pursuit of “efficiency” across our healthcare ecosystem comes at the expense of the provider. At SimplePractice, we believe it should be the opposite. True efficiency comes from infrastructure that supports, rather than constrains, independent practitioners.

That is the vision behind SimpleConnect, which I’m proud to officially introduce today.

The high cost of the middleman model

For years, the industry’s solution to a fragmented provider landscape was managed service organizations (MSOs), which promised a single point of contact for thousands of clinicians.

On paper, it solved both a coordination challenge and a high-cost issue, particularly in an era of expensive EHR systems. In reality, it introduced new ones. These models often add layers of intermediation that increase costs for patients; drive premium rates to the MSO rather than to the clinicians delivering care; and pile on overhead through patient acquisition and administrative costs. Independent practitioners earn nearly 15% less on average than MSOs for the same care delivered.

More importantly, MSOs strip away the autonomy that makes independent practitioners effective. When clinicians are funneled into rigid institutional models to hit efficiency targets, we risk losing the very qualities (e.g., clinical judgment, flexibility, and the therapeutic relationship) that drive outcomes. Independent practitioners, by contrast, can provide clinically driven treatment decisioning that results in better clinician-patient matching, more engaged use of evidence-based methods, and ultimately better outcomes. They deliver this high-quality care with lower administrative overhead and deeper community connections. Yet for years, the industry moved away from this model in favor of consolidation.

The pendulum is now swinging back. We are realizing that autonomy isn’t just a “nice-to-have” for clinicians; it’s a driver of both quality and cost control in mental health. We don't need more middlemen. We need better connectivity.

SimpleConnect: Solving the ecosystem efficiency challenge

To solve this, we looked at the infrastructure we have built over the last decade.

Today, more than 250,000 independent practitioners use SimplePractice to run their practices, while millions of patients use it to find providers, schedule appointments, and access care with or without insurance. We are already the system of record embedded in the daily workflow of tens of thousands of in-network practitioners for virtually every major payer in the country, as well as practitioners who aren't yet in network but could be. This includes significant presence in underserved markets: Over 25,000 SimplePractice clinicians are located in the 10 states with the lowest mental healthcare access. We have the connectivity, the data infrastructure, and the trust of an enormous community.

SimpleConnect is our answer to the ecosystem efficiency challenge. It's a neutral connection layer that connects payers, health systems, employers, and other healthcare partners directly with independent practitioners who are credentialed in their networks, as well as those they want to engage. We provide the infrastructure to work with practitioners wherever they are, without intermediating care or disrupting the workflows practitioners depend on.

The result: Payers get the access and data they need for compliance and ROI, practitioners maintain their autonomy, and patients get better access to care.

How SimpleConnect works

For practitioners, the value proposition of SimpleConnect is clear:

  1. Maintained autonomy and independence. Practitioners continue to run their practices and specialize in clinical conditions and treatments. Practice decisions are clinically informed and driven–including caseload size, patient characteristics, and treatment plans–leading to better clinician-patient matching and outcomes.

  2. Streamlined referrals that match practice goals. We help practitioners intentionally build and maintain a caseload that reflects their professional goals, whether that means deepening a clinical niche, adopting new treatment modalities, or managing specific capacity needs.

  3. Reduced administrative burden. We streamline data reporting and compliance requirements across healthcare ecosystem partners. Instead of managing different portals and reporting systems for each partner, practitioners maintain all of this work within SimplePractice.

  4. Access to new partnership opportunities. Practitioners gain visibility into and can choose to connect with new care collaboration partnerships across payers, health systems, employee assistance programs, and employers.

For payers and health systems, SimpleConnect delivers several key capabilities:

  1. No more ghost directories. We deliver accurate, real-time provider directories that reflect true availability and participation.

  2. Member-facing scheduling and coordination tools. Our member-facing directory and API enable scheduling, care coordination, and engagement with hard-to-reach practitioners, with all features embedded within existing clinical and referral workflows.

  3. Primary care can scale mental health access beyond universal screening. Mental health consistently ranks as a top priority in community needs assessments, yet access to care remains limited by fragmentation and disconnected systems. Health system service line teams can now seamlessly enable mental health referrals from any point of care, routing patients directly into the mental health system of care.

  4. Payer ecosystem efficiency without the markup. By connecting directly with practitioners who are already in a credentialed network, we eliminate the MSO markup entirely while maintaining the connectivity and engagement capabilities that made MSOs appealing in the first place.

  5. Dynamic configuration and geographic flexibility. Payers can expand their networks by engaging practitioners who use SimplePractice and connect their existing networks to our platform for improved connectivity. This is particularly valuable when entering new geographic markets or addressing network adequacy challenges.

SimpleConnect in action: Our partnership with Findhelp

SimpleConnect is being launched via a new partnership with Findhelp, the leading platform for coordinated social care.

Together, we are moving beyond static directories to direct, actionable access to care. By connecting the demand for mental health services on the Findhelp platform with the real-time availability of our 250,000+ practitioners, we are helping participating providers maintain their independence while giving patients a seamless path to the care they need.

The infrastructure for a more resilient future

Mental health care in America is at a critical juncture, but the solution isn’t to force independent practitioners into institutional boxes. Instead, we must build the infrastructure that lets them work the way they work best (independently), while making it effortless for them to participate and collaborate in the broader healthcare ecosystem.

SimplePractice was founded on the belief that practitioners deserve an all-in-one solution that allows them to focus on care rather than administration. SimpleConnect is the natural extension of that mission into the enterprise landscape.

The most impactful solutions aren't always about rebuilding everything from scratch. Sometimes the best innovation is building the bridge between what already works. The future of mental healthcare isn't about choosing between independence and integration; it's about building the infrastructure that makes both possible.
